By the time I realize I like a guy, I’ve already started acting completely unlikable. Fidgeting and fumbling my way through overly agreeable conversations (“You have the flu? I love the flu!”), my initial attraction always alienates me. I even once got a barista to quit because of my flirtation style.
Sometimes a girl shows her interest in you by repelling you, so you need to know what kind of unattractive behaviors to recognize. And if you’re willing overlook these ones, you might be into her, too…
1. She’s A Bully
Anybody who’s ever flirted with someone knows that teasing is a big part of it. As the British Social Issues Research Centre explains, “Men respond particularly well to this form of humor, as it closely resembles the ‘mock-arguments’ and good-humored exchanges of insults which are their normal means of expressing friendship among themselves.”
But there’s gentle teasing and then cutting way too deep. She might be trying to laugh with you, not at you, but you find nothing funny about your thinning hairline. The way to a man’s heart isn’t through eviscerating it, along with his ego!
2. Her Nostrils Are Huge
Way back in 1953, pioneering researcher Dr. Alfred Kinsey wrote in “Sexual Behavior in the Human Female” that, “When there is sexual arousal, the membranes that line the nostrils may secrete more than their usual amounts of mucus,” which “may contribute to the generally swollen state of the nose during sexual activity.” Though it may not be the best look, size matters. You still won’t catch many dudes checking out a girl’s huge set of snot caves.
3. She’s Constantly Playing With Her Hair
When a girl is interested in you, she engages in kinetic gestures like playing with her hair, according to the University of Western Sydney. But as her tossing and twirling increases, there’s something unsettling about her inability to stop. Is it lice? If you sleep over at her place, will bedbugs crawl all over your scalp? Or does she just have a case of the hornies?
4. Her Lips Are Dry
Psychologists at Webster University studied female flirtation for over 2,000 hours, and found lip licking to be one of 52 “nonverbal courtship behaviors in women.” It sounds sexy, but it can cause chapping so severe, antidepressants may be required to treat it. You may wonder, “Does she want my body or my balm?”
5. She Has Crazy Eyes
Not only do we make extreme eye contact when we’re checking someone out, our pupils dilate to show attraction, writes Dr. Joshua Gowin in Psychology Today. And while humans are supposedly attracted to large pupils, some of us are one “awooga” away from looking like a cartoon wolf.
6. She’s Copying All Your Movements
Mirroring a person’s movements, a subconscious phenomenon called synchrony, is a telltale sign of attraction. A 1998 study published in the Journal of Nonverbal Behavior found that “the more interested a woman was in a man, the more complicated these patterns became.” But what if your own mannerisms don’t turn you on? Too bad, ’cause imitation can be the sincerest form of freakiness.
