It takes a lot of courage to stand up to someone in a position of authority. It also takes a lot of stupidity to insult a judge while he's setting your bond.
That's what 18-year-old Penelope Soto of Miami, Florida learned when she appeared before Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat for illegal possession of Xanax. She began her stellar court appearance by bragging about the value of her jewelry collection. The judge (who wondered aloud if she was currently high) set the bond at $5,000, to which Soto replied "adios" while laughing.
The judge didn't appreciate her flippant tone, and reset the bond at $10,000. Not the quickest learner, Soto dropped an f-bomb and extended her middle finger. So the judge countered her insult with one of his own: 30 days in jail for contempt of court. Watch justice be served below.
