Generalizing a large, diverse group of people is never a good idea. Here goes anyway: All basketball fans, regardless of age, ethnicity or opinion of Andrew Bynum’s hair, do the same thing when they witness a weak shot fly into the stands. They wag their finger, just like Dikembe Mutombo taught them.
This universal truth is worth remembering now that Mutombo has reentered the cultural zeitgeist. That’s right, Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo is back, and you have Old Spice to thank for that.
Specifically, he’s back in an 8-bit game (or “advergame,” according to AdWeek) called “Dikembe Mutombo’s 4½ Weeks to Save the World,” and it’s about Mt. Mutobu trying to rescue humanity before the Mayan apocalypse. There’s also a plot thread about “Gangnam Style” distracting people from voting. And a talking bear in a Cosby Sweater.
So essentially, it’s all the self-conscious weirdness that you’d expect from an Old Spice viral marketing campaign. Which would make us roll our eyes, if it didn’t also inspire us to re-watch this:
