Here at "Guy Code," we like to think of ourselves as expert trollers, always scoping out the best the Internet has to offer. But our latest find came from right under our roof. MTV Digital's Brandon Freeberg has created your new favorite Tumblr, "Smokin' Jay Cutler," where he Photoshops cigarettes to Jay Cutler's mouth. The masthead reads, "This site is dedicated to the most apathetic looking athlete in the history of sports." Pure brilliance.
Freeberg created the Tumblr last Friday, the day after Cutler's Bears lost to the Packers. During the game, he and his friends were making fun of Cutler's indifferent expressions, and that's when he remembered something his former roommate, a Bears fan, once said to him. "He said he wouldn't be surprised if Cutler was in the huddle smoking a cigarette," Freeberg said. "And I started saying that to everyone. I just thought it was hysterical. He definitely has a ho-hum apathetic look."
The timing couldn't have been more perfect, as Cutler was being ripped to shreds by the media the next day for his embarrassingly disastrous game. "Tumblr's really good at surfacing tags and I just imagined that they had writers looking for things about him," Freeberg said. "I totally realized that I caught lightning in a bottle. I in no way thought it would get picked up--it was more just like I sent it to my friends."
In less than a week, the link to Freeberg's Tumblr has been retweeted by Deadspin, Grantland, USA Today and even the Chicago Tribune. "So maybe that means Cutler's going to see it," Freeberg said. "I don't think he'll come after me...I don't really have anything against Cutler. I actually won a fantasy football league with him one year."
Clearly, apathetic-looking pictures of Cutler are easy to find, so the hardest part for Freeberg was finding a good picture of a cigarette. "I was looking to get a cigarette like the one Samuel L. Jackson had in 'Jurassic Park' where he hadn’t ashed in a long time and like half the cigarette is ash," Freeberg said. "You also have to tilt it correctly. The more you tilt it, the more he doesn't give a s***."
Freeberg said he'll keep posting pictures and taking user submissions for as long as it’s still relevant and funny to people. "I think it’s just ridiculous that it was such a stupid thing that for some reason resonates with people," Freeberg said. "I have such a stupid sense of humor and the fact that people get it is just hilarious to me."
