Lingerie Bowl IX may have been a championship game rematch just like Super Bowl XLVI, but this was a one-sided affair. The Los Angeles Temptation crushed the Philadelphia Passion 28-6 on their way to a third straight Lingerie Football League Championship.
Philadelphia was averaging 50 points a game heading into the matchup, but without league MVP Marirose Roach (out with a concussion) their offense was anemic and L.A.'s defense pounced like a lion stalking a wounded gazelle.
For the Temptation, quarterback Ashley Salerno finished 15-22 for 125 yards, 3 touchdowns and an Eli Manning-like zero interceptions. She shared MVP honors with running back Amber Reed, who had 57 yards and 2 total touchdowns.
In the game's opening drive, Salerno (who was her high school's starting QB back in the day!) methodically drove L.A. down the field, and Reed capped it off with a touchdown run.
Without Roach, L.A. keyed on forcing Philly QB Christy Bell to pass. Bell was dealing with her own injury issues, as she was playing on a broken foot. But the foot didn't seem to be a problem at first. Down 8-0, the Passion looked poised to answer on their first drive, but L.A.'s stout D shut them down on fourth and goal.
L.A. got the ball back and after taking a QB draw to the two yard line, Salerno stood in the pocket and delivered a touchdown strike under pressure to Audrey Latsko--14-0, Temptation.
After a long Jenny Butler rush on the ensuing drive, Philadelphia was in striking distance again. But their two-minute drill fell apart: a sack on third down and an incompletion over the middle on fourth.
After the first half, L.A. had amassed 124 yards of offense, averaging 7.3 yards a play, while Philly only eked out 58 yards for 3.2 per play.
Early in the second half, Salerno led the Temptation down to Philly territory. But on fourth and goal, with the Temptation in the wildcat, Reed's pass into the end zone was broken up. Two plays later, Bell threw to a wide open Whitney Paronish for a 40 yard TD on blown coverage, making it 14-6.
But that was as close as Philadelphia would get. Salerno tallied another touchdown pass, this one to Danielle Harvey, on their way to the 28-6 rout.
