Prince Fielder's signing with the Detroit Tigers brings him back to the Motor City, where his father Cecil "Big Daddy" Fielder used to play. In six full seasons with Detroit, Cecil tallied an average 36 home runs, 113 RBI and a .259 batting average. Cecil was 26 when he began there in 1990. Prince was six.
By joining Detroit as a free agent, Prince has 1) made a s***load of money, $214 million over nine years, and 2) invited a lot of comparisons to his father, with whom he is estranged. Cecil has wanted to make amends. Prince has not. Maybe being back in D-town will change that. This much is clear: Prince grew up a chubby baseball junkie in Detroit. And these photos and McDonald's commercial (go figure) suggest it's been his destiny all along to be a chubby baseball player in Detroit as an adult.
