If talking trash won fights, Chael Sonnen would be the heavyweight champion of the world. The man with the golden mouthpiece must have Vince McMahon waiting for the day Sonnen decides he's done with real fighting and wants to join the WWE. He's obviously the best choice to host the 2011 Fighters Only World MMA Awards, which takes place tonight, Nov. 30, in Las Vegas. MTV Clutch talked to Sonnen before his hosting duties to discuss the show, Anderson Silva and why he dissed ring girl Arianny Celeste.
Will we see some of that glowing Chael Sonnen personality on stage at the MMA Awards?
It's not my night. There's a time and a place for everything and this isn't it. I'll do my job and hand out awards.
You said some unflattering things about UFC ring girl Arianny Celeste. Were you trying to be mean or do you really think she holds cards that reflect her IQ test scores?
I don't have any malice. I'm a big supporter. Obviously, she makes left turns for a living. She's kind of like Dale Earnhardt Jr. I think it's amazing.
How do you feel about the exposure you've gained over the past couple of years?
I don't need the exposure for myself but I like to see the sport grow. I think the industry as a whole deserves it. We're the hardest working people in the toughest industry out there. It's been nice to be recognized.
There are rumors that you're fighting Mark Munoz next, is that true?
He and I will fight at some point just because the division is small. Without letting on too much, there is a fight happening on Saturday between Jason Miller and Michael Bisping, and I think the outcome of that fight will play a big role in who I'm fighting next.
That means you won't get the rematch with Anderson Silva you want.
I'm fine without fighting Silva. He's a phony and always been a phony. Aside from beating him, I had a big interest in exposing him. That's clearly happened. It's mission accomplished for me. Onward and upward.
The picture of you and Ed Soares floating around on the internet has drawn the ire of Silva.
I stay off the internet. But Ed's a really good guy who has a tough job babysitting prima donnas like Anderson and having to deal with those schoolgirl headaches. I think they should appreciate Ed more and the things he does for them.
Do you believe that Anderson Silva is avoiding another fight with you?
I know for a fact that the only reason we aren't having the fight is because he won't commit to it. It's the biggest fight in the industry. There is no bigger fight and it's not happening. He's ducking me. I'll do my part to do the fight and I'll move on either way. Anderson Silva is not a big deal to me.
If Anderson Silva wins Fighter of the Year, how difficult will it be for you to give it to him?
The fans vote. He doesn’t have very many fans so it would be very surprising if he got it. If people have a different opinion about him than I do, I will hand him his award and wish him well.
Do you have any interest in being a coach on "The Ultimate Fighter"?
No. I do things I don't want to all the time, but I hope they never call me for that job. I don't like to leave Oregon and the hill that I live on. Coming out to live somewhere to do a reality show for six weeks is not on my wish list.
Why should people tune in to the MMA Awards show?
It's going to be a great night. People love these kinds of things like the Oscars and the Emmys. Most people tune in to watch pay-per-views to see their favorite fighters and we're going to have a number of them from Bellator and Strikeforce to the UFC under one roof. The show is going to be great. I'm not here to beg people to tune in. If you like entertainment then tune in, if you don't, we're going to do fine with or without you.
Watch the 2011 World MMA Awards Sunday, Dec.11 at 8 p.m. on FOX Sports.
