Chances are you've never heard of the Taiwanese company Next Media Animation. But trust us, you've seen their stellar work. NMA broke onto the scene in 2010 with their surprisingly plausible CGI reenactment of the Tiger Woods debacle. The clip quickly went viral in America, and NMA soon began churning out more "news animations," each one more outlandish than the last.
By now, NMA is in on the joke, using their cheesy Starfox-like graphics to create hyper-literal representations of the events in question, starring laughable avatars who couldn't possibly look LESS like their real-world subjects. But that doesn't make the videos any less amazing. They've churned out dozens of these gems this year, but below we've gathered the seven most insane ones.
7. Kim Kardashian Divorce
It looks like NMA rehashed their Khloe Kardashian avatar to represent Kim in this one. So Khlim marries Kris Humphries, who's wearing his Nets jersey at the ceremony. Soon after, Kim chucks a basketball into Kris's face. We're not sure, but we think this CGI version of their marriage actually lasted longer than the real thing.
6. EU Debt Crisis
Some of NMA's best work is featured in the stories that aren't conducive to video recreations. Such as the EU/Greece debt crisis. There's really no need to explain the nuances of the Old World's financial fiasco when you can depict France as a mime, Germany's Merkel as a punishing dominatrix and flank China's president by pandas while the Greek Prime Minister rocks a toga. Hey, it's not a stereotype if it's poorly animated (see: any cartoon before 1970).
5. NBA Lockout
Turning the NBA lockout into a compelling video is harder than doing the same with the story of Facebook's founding. Leave it to the wizards at NMA to pull of this David Fincher-esque stunt. We begin with David Stern (you know it's him because his name is emblazoned on the front and back of his suit) playing one-on-one against Derek Fisher. Next, Fisher and Lebron waddle menacingly near a pie while wielding a machete. But evil Stern comes in with a chainsaw and goes Leatherface on that pie. Then he gets gay-married to Time Warner Cable (seriously, watch it), and King James loses his crown for a cap that says "salary" (get it?).
4. Tim Tebow
We begin with a haloed Tim Tebow wearing Victoria's Secret Angel's wings and descending to Earth as the Bronco faithful bow down in reverence. So, pretty much an exact reenactment of his comeback win over the Jets. CGI Tebow then spears a dolphin with a trident, and fans pray at his altar. All in all, NMA's most accurate work to date.
3. "The Avengers"...We Guess
Scarlett Johansson snaps nude pics of herself while Thor watches and drools. Next, Captain America injects himself with a mondo syringe labeled "ROIDS" as Iron Man snorts a line of blow. The evil Loki sends the ScarJo photos to everyone, including President Obama, who high-fives Loki for this patriotic act. Joss Whedon (dressed as Superman) and Buffy the Vampire Slayer then brutally murder Loki, and the posse attends a celebratory sex party. Wow, where is that comic book?
2. Penn State Scandal
By now we know many of the lurid details of this shameful story. But leave it to NMA to make it tastelessly hilarious. Watch as Jerry Sandusky morphs into a tiger, and Mike McQueary walks in on said tiger mauling a helpless zebra in the locker room showers. The rest follows suit in a crazy downhill spiral.
1. Justin Bieber Paternity Lawsuit
This one comes with a warning. If you can't handle some racy language and a CGI Justin Bieber - who strongly resembles Bruce Jenner -vigorously thrusting and showing us his O-face, don't watch this one. Um, could a video come with a more ringing endorsement than that?!
