"Headbangers Ball" is back with a vengeance over at MTV2, where host Jose Mangin gives metalheads their weekly dose of heavy riffs and thrashing vocals. And each week we'll dive into the show for some metal immersion therapy and come back to you with the five most face-melting moments for metal purists and noobs alike.
This week, Jose ventured into a few legendary metal dens, got a remedial lesson in Greek curse words and revealed he was an avid watcher of CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" (that's where he found out Jack Osbourne's fiancée was pregnant...who says cable news is dead?). So strap in for another raucous installment of the Ball.
1. Worshippers of the Dark Lord, we found your temple.
Jose spoke to Machine Head at Last Rites in New York City, which is part rock venue, part tattoo parlor, part art gallery and "the metalest of metal" according to the band. The 360-degree look Jose gives us resembles a level from Wolfenstein 3-D--only instead of swastikas and mutant Nazis, it's littered with pentagrams and tattooed drunkards.
2. Richard Christy of "The Howard Stern Show" has been known to wear an adult diaper.
And not for a "Stern Show" gag, either. Christy, who splits his time between the radio show and drumming for Charred Walls of the Damned, cops to throwing on a pair of Depends when he goes to concerts so he won't miss his favorite band's set. Stern needs to do a piece with this guy in Times Square on New Year's Eve.
3. Ozzy Osbourne wears Sex Panther cologne. No confirmation on the adult diapers.
The Prince of Darkness wears a cologne so enticing that even the dudes around him take notice. Gus G, guitarist for Ozzy's band, informs Headbanger Nation that, yes, Ozzy has an irresistible trademark musk, and its origins are a corporate secret.
4. It's safe to say Jose is living the dream.
The day after screaming himself hoarse at the Big Four's Yankee Stadium show--not to mention introducing Metallica--our host played a different kind of host. Mangin took in California metalheads Kyng during their New Jersey stop and got to crush a few beers with the band. Meanwhile, the highlight of our week was raiding the cheese-and-cracker tray the suits left in the conference room.
5. All true metalheads should make the pilgrimage to Duff's in Brooklyn.
Make your way through the hipster hamlet of Williamsburg, and when the plaid crowd starts thinning out and only black shirts remain, you'll know you've stumbled upon this thrasher's paradise. Both Richard Christy and the guys in Machine Head gave quick shout-outs to Duff's in this week's episode. If you're in New York, be sure to stop by the dive bar...you just might run into someone you've seen on "Headbangers Ball."
