No one seems more excited for his 2011 Video Music Awards nominations than OFWGKTA’s front man Tyler, The Creator. Usually too-cool-for-school and chock full of anti-establishment rage, the rapper recently tweeted, “Video Of The F—ing Year. What The F–. So F—ing Happy F—!!! I Cried Legit. F— it.” He went on to write about how he’s only been at this a year and he’s already accomplishing most of his goals. Tyler is also nominated for Best New Artist with Kreayshawn (“Gucci Gucci”), Big Sean (“My Last”), Wiz Khalifa (“Black and Yellow”) and Foster the People (“Pumped Up Kicks”).
The only thing that can dampen Tyler’s spirits now is losing the Video of the Year Award to Bruno Mars for “Grenade.” Especially since he calls out the singer in the video for which he’s nominated, “Yonkers.” To wite: “And stab Bruno Mars in his god***n esophagus/ And won’t stop until the cops come in.” Tyler also called Bruno out on Twitter: “If I lose to that f—ing Bruno F—ing Mars I’m going on a killing spree. Deadass.” You get the sense he’d much rather lose to the Beastie Boys (“Make Some Noise”), Adele (“Rolling in the Deep”) or Katy Perry (“Firework”).
The final possible wrinkle in this beef is Kanye West, who called “Yonkers” the best video of the past year. If Bruno Mars ends up winning over Tyler, do you think West will pull another “Taylor Swift,” where he runs up on stage and says, ” Yo Bruno, I’m really happy for you…I’ll let you finish. But Tyler had one of the best videos of all time! One of the best videos of all time!” Seems like security ought to be tightened.
